There were two moments in the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2 that I still think about.

The other is just...strange. There's a camp outside Valentine where a man is building a house with his sons to teach them the value of hard work or something (they are not pleased).

It's not accompanied by a mission, and I check back periodically as I progress through the game, seeing that more and more of the house is put together each time.

Eventually, I'm in the area and I hear gunshots. Can't figure out where they're coming from for a while, until I realize that father and his boys are caught in a gunfight. A guy hiding behind a rock says something like "we told you not to build on this land!"

I run up to help, crouching behind a woodpile next to the father, who's shooting back. We get most of the aggressors together, but as soon as it looks to be finished, the father takes one in the head.

It's shocking. He's right next to me, his hat flies off as he crumples. One son cries out. The both of them flee. I finish everyone off, and the father doesn't get back up. He's dead, or seems that way.

I keep checking back periodically, but the camp is now empty. The house still unfinished. Their story looks to have hit an abrupt end because of my own failure. Until one day they're all back, as if nothing happened.

I can't ask them about it. There's no wound on the father, and they keep building. I'm able to continue their story, offering them money when they run out at one point. I don't come back after that.

I have no idea if this was a glitch, if I somehow missed the connective tissue here. All I know is that what was initially one of the most shocking moments I ever experienced in a game like this just shrugged its shoulders and reversed itself.
