Mimicry is fundamental to our nature. The key is not to try to be original, but to curate what you mimic.

Maybe the missing qualifier is "with variation" — evolution, not duplication. Mimicking even the very best thing can't lead to progress unless there some element of change. Biological evolution is (unwittingly) curated mimicry with variation. Maybe the same with ideas & behavior.
