we all have this sense mars is inevitable, and i’m not sure why. i see a lot of nasa marketing material with soft, general promises and no mission planned.

and sure, these things take time! but we’ve had the technology to go to mars since at least the 70s, and we’ve had a lot of nasa marketing material with soft, general promises and no mission planned since the early 90s.

technological development under elon has been incredible - spectacular! - but our martian problem is not technological. our martian problem is a decades-long, bipartisan apathy hidden beneath a cheery, “we can do it!” facade.

people say they want to go to mars. but the actions we’ve taken, and continue to take, indicate no such thing. i’m not a cynic, i’m just nervous, and i wonder: if we can’t even muster the will for a single mission to the red planet, what hope do we have of colonization?
