I can't get my head around American friends telling me that The New Deal was presented only positively in their history class. As a Brit reading American 20th century political history in detail for first time, FDR's actions read terribly.

right, I guess I don’t understand why contemporary reflection of FDR is always so rosy. Reads like there was a v deliberate plan to smear Hoover etc and at the same time perpetuate FDR and the ideals created then, which still shape culture today into thinking big gov’t is good.

"I guess I don’t understand why contemporary reflection of FDR is always so rosy. " Because politics is a murky, dirty business. It is not a science, or even a business. As for smearing Hoover, did he really need smearing? The man was a stain. Read up his treatment of MLK.
