gawker isn't a weak party assaulted by an unchecked power. that would rather be the kind of person they violated, unchecked, for years.
and (INSANE I have to say this) empowering victims who couldn't otherwise defend themselves is not a problem, it's a corrective.

i think the best way to fix this problem is to let anyone contribute money to lawsuits, but all funds for lawyers..

..are pooled and then divided evenly. each side gets the same funds. if you want better lawyers, they get better lawyers, etc
