Truly don’t care about Elon Musk being on a special magazine cover but I just don’t understand “making humans a spacefaring species” / “preserving the light of consciousness” as goals for anyone to care about.

it's not that there aren't good reasons to pursue space expansion, the "light of consciousness" thing just isn't one of them. too much potential for repugnant conclusion-type reasoning, which is what I find bleak

yeah, we all have that intuitive sense but when you follow where it points it's hard to avoid the repugnant conclusion or other excesses of longtermism. it's good to question our intuitions. there are better ways to justify space exploration
