ten years ago we were convinced self-driving cars were here, and pessimists hysterically decried everything from hypothetical mass job loss to AI murder bots. today, no meaningful autonomous cars, and a driver shortage. even our pessimists were too optimistic.

Fear mongering (from all sides) lead to a under diversification of R&D tech paths. Everyone basically ended up doing the same things, so everyone has failed for basically the same reasons.
