ten years ago we were convinced self-driving cars were here, and pessimists hysterically decried everything from hypothetical mass job loss to AI murder bots. today, no meaningful autonomous cars, and a driver shortage. even our pessimists were too optimistic.

Who has the best chance of deploying AVs at a decent scale the soonest?
probably the military (which will buy the tech), then whichever company hires the best lobbyists. we can't even get legal scooters in most american cities. government will be the major roadblock.

Federal government seems unlikely to be able to pass anything substantial. Cities might, but I’m most interested in self-driving between cities, not within them.

Once Tesla demonstrates they've solved the problem (at scale) in the next 1-2 yrs it will force the govts hand to allow it The Tesla tech is still pretty shaky but the foundation has been laid for them to solve it (e.g. can test &debug the software more easily than anyone else)
