ten years ago we were convinced self-driving cars were here, and pessimists hysterically decried everything from hypothetical mass job loss to AI murder bots. today, no meaningful autonomous cars, and a driver shortage. even our pessimists were too optimistic.

Who has the best chance of deploying AVs at a decent scale the soonest?

probably the military (which will buy the tech), then whichever company hires the best lobbyists. we can't even get legal scooters in most american cities. government will be the major roadblock.

I'm honestly confused, I rode in a driverless car 5 years ago, and it seemed pretty close? Did the person dying in Arizona just make the bar much higher for launch?

I've seen the point that the economics for ride services suck for suburban and intercity transport, which is where self-driving can be effective right now. Dense environments offer the best economics but the most challenging for autonomy

The biggest obstacle for AVs to overcome is trust. We basically know for a fact that they’re already safer in the aggregate than human drivers, but people still have a weird gut feeling about letting a car do all the work, and even 1 serious accident feels like too much.

As with aviation. "Safer" isn't enough. We'll stick with good old-fashioned manslaughter for now.
