Things I've heard from prominent tech visionaries who are all friends with each other: -civilization is going to end because we're not having enough babies -there are people alive now who will never die -we're <20 years away from the singularity, when humans and AI will merge

don't these scenarios kind of cancel each other out? if we "solve" aging, we don't really need to worry about population replacement. and if the singularity arrives, hoo boy, human biology in general becomes kind of irrelevant, right?

I should say, these people aren't necessarily friends with each other, they coinvest and say nice things about each other in public sometimes but they probably hate each other a fair amount

agree with the thrust of what you're saying here, a lot of this stuff is definitely in conflict. but i think what we're probably feeling is a tech culture shift from optimistic to pessimistic. a lot of the more positive stuff you listed is (regrettably) just a little dated.

Yeah, depopulation/life extension seem like an upside/downside scenario. The singularity one is the one that really throws me, especially as it was offered with a high degree of confidence

yes, singularity conversation just completely vanished. i guess it will either never happen or it's already here, our sentient internet maybe, quietly shaping the discourse to keep invisible.
