Things I've heard from prominent tech visionaries who are all friends with each other: -civilization is going to end because we're not having enough babies -there are people alive now who will never die -we're <20 years away from the singularity, when humans and AI will merge
agree with the thrust of what you're saying here, a lot of this stuff is definitely in conflict. but i think what we're probably feeling is a tech culture shift from optimistic to pessimistic. a lot of the more positive stuff you listed is (regrettably) just a little dated.

Yeah, depopulation/life extension seem like an upside/downside scenario. The singularity one is the one that really throws me, especially as it was offered with a high degree of confidence

yes, singularity conversation just completely vanished. i guess it will either never happen or it's already here, our sentient internet maybe, quietly shaping the discourse to keep invisible.
