It’s convenient for the, to use this rhetoric in a world where such patents exist—as opposed to a world where the advancements were never made in the first place
-
You would have a point if these companies didn't rely on publicly funded r&d. We basically gave them the patent in exchange for scaling up production, as is typically the case.

Chairman Mao was not like Hitler. He didn’t order people murdered. He just forced policies that created millions of people to starve to death with the best of intentions.

You could just buy the patent at market value with government funds, open source it, and bathe in the positive externalities. Not sure if Bernie plans to do this, but solving the problem of incentives is possible- just give the companies incentives
-
Then you would be giving money to undesirables like Elon. That can't happen!!! They must be allied to the party goals!!!

The difficulty with arguing with capitalists is asking how much they need to be satiated. At face value, $10B is an absurd wealth adjustment. They’ve made their wealth over the past 18 months, why not give up the patent at this point for a global pandemic?
-
I think about this a lot. For me, having a few million dollars would be more than enough and I would likely stop working. I would no longer be adding value to society. For the Elons, Gates, and Bezos it is never enough, but they continue to add value to society. We need them
