Two criticisms of the progress community: “You want everyone to just complacently accept the status quo!” “Why can't you just be happy with the progress we've already made? Nothing is enough for you!” Is this a failure in communication, or a motivated reading? Genuinely asking
i think most people don't really know why they don't like something at first, then reach for whatever reason first comes to them. this is probably esp true for a sufficiently weird topic e.g. progress studies.

I have a different, specific concern with the field: everyone lives in the Bay Area. Living in a land where building is illegal makes progress seem like a fun academic idea vs. something you can actually do in the world.

Yeah, I think this is explanation (though least flattering to humans) is probably the most correct one. It’s rare to see “Hm, let me look at this and decide if I like it or not?” No one does that.
