I have a different, specific concern with the field: everyone lives in the Bay Area. Living in a land where building is illegal makes progress seem like a fun academic idea vs. something you can actually do in the world.

Yeah, I think this is explanation (though least flattering to humans) is probably the most correct one. It’s rare to see “Hm, let me look at this and decide if I like it or not?” No one does that.
