ending the SATs effectively abolishes academic merit as a path to college. this leaves exactly two options for young people hoping to enter a top school: win a lottery, or know someone.https://twitter.com/TeresaWatanabe/status/1461732826739396611 …

The end of an era: @UofCalifornia permanently ends standardized tests for admission, a half century after it adopted the SAT and propelled it into widespread national use. No alternative exam exists that wouldn't create biased results, UC says. https://lat.ms/3261p1F

Are they not going to look at grades...?

grades are measured on a school-by-school, relationship-by-relationship basis. they're an almost useless metric, and especially among top students (who all have straight As).

Israel tried to abolish the SAT and went back within a year. They found that GPAs are far more discriminatory than SATs due to private tutoring that can last for years and school quality differences.

This will never happen in the U.S., because that requires evidence based policy and decision making.

Now more kids will be padding their "resumes" with more ridiculous extra curricular accomplishments to differentiate, which will require money. Surely some parent whose super smart kid that aced the SAT for other schools but didn't get into first choice Berkeley will sue?

Eh, to be fair top students all get into UCs anyway.

Why doesn’t that logic apply to SATs? Most top students and candidates to top schools have 99 percentile test scores too.

Good luck to immigrant families w. 0 connections and r English learners themselves. CAEDU should be investing in programs for English learners from pre-K. Imagine learning math concepts w/out basic literacy. CA Edu found a way to mask their incompetence.https://edsource.org/2021/california-still-lags-in-helping-long-term-english-learners/662919 …

I feel like people are significantly underestimating the amount of grade inflation that has happened over the last 20 years. People with GPAs over 5 on a 4 point scale are relatively common at the top
