all things considered, a virus escaped from a lab conducting gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses could have been — maybe should have been? — far deadlier. a hard lesson, but if we learn from covid it might actually spare us 10 or 100x as many lives in the future.

Last I heard, the pandemic had been used to fund lots more gain-of-function research to “prevent future pandemics”.

dumb proposal. viral tools are a key part of biological research, and hobbling scientific inquiry for political brownie points is short sighted.
