Other big change is city pols using social justice rhetoric to excuse their inability to address problems. I remember Gascon pledging (and failing) to clean up the TL years ago, now all of the energy goes into rationalizing how awful it is.

I think the main difference is people getting more sensitive, for two reasons. One, people who would have been on the peninsula in the past are in the city now. Two, ppl born after ~1990 lived their entire lives in a very low crime environment.
