When exactly did we stop calling people yuppies, and why? I feel like I *should* have read the canonical big think piece on this, but haven’t?

Like, the superficial answer is the yuppies won, and now everybody has their complicated espresso order and walks around talking on their cellphone and uses extra virgin olive oil for everything etc, but there's more going on?

i think the aesthetic changed in the early 90s with the rise of grunge. shabby chic etc. then the 2000s brought us hipsters. now it’s the modern farmhouse. it’s all designed to look less fancy, which complicates the archetype?

Yeah and I think the larger thing is the whole 90s thing about "selling out" and commercial / material success being uncool just completely evaporated, so now it has to be a more complicated thing about "power" or something

Like, my guess is the yuppie today is the "tech bro"/ "finance bro" and the perjorative is meant to be way more about their politics / social standing than it is about wealth signifiers & lifestyle stuff
