There's also a hell of a difference between the lethality of smallpox in the eighteenth century (esp. in an army camp, subject to martial law) and the lethality of covid in the twenty first.
yup, the comparison is absurd from pretty much every angle. small pox is far more dangerous, the army was voluntary, the existential danger of smallpox *to* the army was clear and present, american independence was on the line etc. etc.
