It's absolutely insane to think those were the only two options. POTB are setting the stage for the next round of ridiculousness.

I am not familiar with POTB, would you be willing to define this term?

It was only a “forever war” in the sense that our presence in Korea is a forever war.

It wouldn't have been popular (with the U S) by any stretch, but I'm thinking a gradual withdrawal would have gone better.

THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT WE DID You can't keep what is effectively a puppet regime running forever without support of the puppeteers, and drawing down even slower than we did would have likely only endangered *more* American lives.

Those weren’t the only options, and exit communication was likely already irrelevant as of July. Your observation seems predicated on the assumption that coalition forces were not being outmatched and outmaneuvered by the opposing coalition (Taliban-China-?) months ago.

Polling of the Afghan people on the Taliban specifically, however, consistently shows support topping out in the low 20% range, and normally lower. Sharia, as a concept, means something different and more positive to Muslims than it does to Westerners who use the term for fear.

Immediate withdrawal? We’ve been overtly drawing down troops for years.
