politicians convinced that they were doing good also took us to the moon and split the atom

and then used that knowledge to create a bomb(s) that killed hundreds of thousands in one fell swoop. (not to mention the proliferation of arms that cost us who knows how many trillions of dollars.)

Without those bombs, Japan would have been invaded by land and millions would have died instead.
