the law school version of this trap is one of the bleakest, as it's actually very good. for the most part, we know the salary necessary to recoup the cost of an MFA is a long shot, but our culture drills into us from childhood the very wrong notion all lawyers are rich.https://twitter.com/tomgara/status/1422562008403218440 …

Does this take federal loan forgiveness programs into account? Do they still have to be a serf for 8 years to qualify?

As quiet as it’s kept, doctors have the same issue. Medical school debt is real

Yeah it’s definitely coded as the “be upper middle class without doing math” option. I actually wonder what the most genuinely reliable option for that is today?

Medical school is worse in some ways. Comparable debt burden with larger opportunity cost. Entry-level big law associate salary ~$200K while medicine residents live in squalor making $70K for 3-8 years following med school

a subtler aspect of the JD version of this is the intense pressure at elite law schools not to "sell out"—i.e. to go into public service law instead of to a big firm. Note that the first person quoted in this piece took a gig as a public defender

This is fairly social-group dependent. Approximately 70 percent of the students at my law school will end up in BigLaw, not suggestive of much pressure
