Last year Tony Fauci and I famously, prematurely, & wrongly advised against masks. I felt it was the best call at the time, but now regret it.
I’m worried the CDC also made a similarly premature, misinterpreted, yet still harmful call on masking in the face of 
delta variant.

It’s baffling to me that “the science evolved” is still the official narrative. The common-sense (Taleb) position: “we know very little about this novel virus, so let's be very careful at first” still appears to be too unscientific for these sophisticated minds. Many such cases.

I'm not sure what they knew or didn't, but there are plenty of examples of when appeals to reason failed during this... I don't think telling people not to buy masks to save them for medical professionals would have worked.

I don’t think it really had anything to do with supply issues, that was more so historical revisionism starting in May/June to cover their asses. Deep down it was the lack of an RCT for mask effectiveness. The appeal to “evidence-based science”.

Asian countries like China or South Corea didn't hesitate to use masks from the first minute. Might be a coincidence that they did have supply.
