if you are a person with any kind of influence who cares about free speech, you need to stop explaining to people what is and is not a violation of the norm and start making the case — passionately — for its existence

Yes. Litigation can also prevent this. There is a lot of 1st Amendment case law prohibiting government actors from coercing private entitites...if only there was a century-old organization with the guts, resources, and expertise willing to take on such a case....
