crazier thing about studies like this to me has always been the placebo group. should we not be further exploring the fact that belief in being healed itself appears to heal people?https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1389411338250715138 …

The study was about MDMA assisted therapy so the placebo group was talk therapy with the placebo pill. The fact that therapy works is not that surprising.

the entire purpose of placebo implies the simple act of taking ‘something’ could impact health. simple google search reveals it does / has across many, many, many trials.

For sure, I'm aware of that. But the effect in the placebo group in this case was rather strong (for a reason), therefore I thought it was important to emphasize that. It would also be interesting to see how the two groups compare over time in this particular study.

What's particularly interesting is the effect of Open Label Placebos, when the patient actually knows that it's placebo. Here's a meta-study on the subject. It actually works in many cases.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-83148-6 …

really interesting. i think the act of ‘taking something’ is powerfully associated with ‘healing now’ across the west. i bet many people simply didn’t believe it when they were told they were taking a placebo. curious how these studies might hit in non-western cultures.

That would be interesting. Also: "The general problem in the research of placebo treatments is to differentiate adequately between a placebo effect (effect due to the placebo treatment) and a placebo response. The latter refers to all effects found in the placebo arm of a RCT."
