Moments used to be more human-curated, now things seem to be mostly editorial explanations of what is already trending. I see it under "Trending". If they ignore the trend in an effort not to amplify, well...see: trending topicsgate from FB in 2015.
there is that little feedback button that says "This Trend is Harmful or Spammy" and I understand the technical meanings of those terms (and don't report) but it always makes me think, well, The Discourse is pretty spammy these days.
it still exists b/c twitter moments PM is too good at their job
Twitter (all social media) nurtures whatever expands the attention economy & its attendant inflows negatively veiled emotions, especially in/out-group conflicts, are more powerful than positive ones due to evolutionary pressures outrage & disgust drive engagement
as long as the social fraying externalities aren't accounted for, the trend will continue to accelerate click bait, rage posting, dox/cancel ops partly why Balaji insists that pseudonymity has to be the next step, to provide same layer of insulation from the damage
btw this question - this is the speech/reach and curation question that has gotten sucked into the debate about "censorship" but it really is THE question. how does this kind of curation drive attention, spark conversation, how is it incentivized, etc
I really like the non-controversial moments, like "hey check out this volcano eruption"
