if we could cut the cost of housing in half, populism on the left and right would almost certainly collapse. probably worth tabling ideological hang-ups for the moment, and pursuing policy that works towards this goal.

What makes you attribute it to that? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying that it’s a specific enough problem (one that arguably is symptomatic of deeper ones) that it feels like it could be fixed and these dynamics continue as usual.

Eg I could make an argument that UBI could have this outcome, even if it were to create a world where nobody owns houses anymore, if the root cause is a lack of sufficient financial security to feel free to grow and follow one’s interests.
