The logic of subsidizing less popular writers still makes sense to me from a consumer point of view. The problem was these media institutions started purging and constraining their most interesting writers and became naked propaganda outlets.

Basically I think we need new/more magazines. A place whereI can read Yglesias, Razib Khan, and Moldbug, etc and not have shell out $100 a month.

Why Substack favors writing-able over writing-disabled and further entrenches inequality - my latest for the New York Times.

some people clearly haven't been thinking about this stuff since before 2016! ah to be so young, so sweet, so surprised https://gawker.com/the-problem-with-journalism-is-you-need-an-audience-1752937252 … the key question of the economy: who will finance average creators whose stuff isn't very good but those people can't/won't "work"?! lol

This pattern shows up all over the place, and global popularity is not necessarily the only mark of value. Figuring out how to intermesh breadth and depth is at the heart of creative marketplace design.

It's a lot like cable packages and the shift to (semi-) a la carte streaming options. That being said, I occasionally do find the article on the next page, or whatever's on the next channel, interesting, and it'll be a shame to lose that optional serendipity.

The interesting 2nd order question for me - whose careers? NYT is in the Twitter crosshairs, but reality is their business is at an all time high. Could Substack fill the void of local publications? Do 2nd tier national brands get wiped out, replaced by SME personas?

The open question I still grapple with here is what happens to investigative journalism, which is really important but also doesn’t quite fit into the subscription model since it’s not regular. This is something that probably needs to be cross subsidized no?

Who’s subsidizing? I don’t think the decline of investigative journalism has been an oversight

The last 10 yrs in print journalism has been a slow motion car crash where capitalism collides with the newsroom. Some are still adjusting to reality.
