uncomfortable, nagging thought: how is media misinformation not just going to become even worse in an age of ubiquitous, independent journalists free of the even minimal institutional pressure they’re currently under to own up to mistakes, corrections etc.?
presently, best case outcome seems to be a normalized state of all out information war in which readers accept that everyone is lying to them, at all times, at least a little bit, which seems... also not good?
I've accepted this and lived accordingly for a few years now.
I’ve thought about this a lot especially with deepfakes and such. technology is evolving faster than our brains can and I’m not sure psychologically how humans will be able to deal with not being able to trust their own eyes and ears.
deepfake detection technology is evolving in tandem with deepfakes though, right? i’m thinking about those girls who photographed fairies about a century ago. we can never trust our senses entirely, but truth tends to prevail

If company valuations can be driven to ‘fair values’ by the free market can the same not happen for information and the Truth?
That's a reversion to how it was when newspapers first came on the scene. Each paper had a partisan slant. We got along just fine.

I think about this from time to time & what I tell myself is: The “truth” has value, those who consistently report a truth closer to reality will gain a share of the market from people who value the truth.
It will spread through word of mouth from there, because dealing with a liar consistently has costs to your real life.
