presently, best case outcome seems to be a normalized state of all out information war in which readers accept that everyone is lying to them, at all times, at least a little bit, which seems... also not good?

uncomfortable, nagging thought: how is media misinformation not just going to become even worse in an age of ubiquitous, independent journalists free of the even minimal institutional pressure they’re currently under to own up to mistakes, corrections etc.?

Because every single one of them only has their own personal brand to stand on. No masthead with centuries of history to prop them up. Same reason Ford can weather decades of meh, but Tesla has to nail every model spot on, or die.
