mike you’re not even close to having high school age kids why are you so deeply invested in keeping a status quo policy now instead of making sure the whole system is healthier

you are a very smart person with a kind of extremely pronounced bullshit detector that i genuinely admire, i simply refuse to believe you are looking at this situation thinking "yes, schools will be better now"

the reason we can't build rational, politically engaged community in sf is smart people generally can't imagine a future for themselves here. schools are an enormous part of that. i want a home, kids, and to send my kids to public school. don't feel this is insane to think about.

i’m not saying that at all and now you’re avoiding my actual questions in favor of strawmanning

stephanie added,
stephanie @isostephnotable omission from the anti lottery lowell discourse is the opinion of the school’s black student union, composed of equally high achieving students who passed all the bars and yet still supported the measure because they were tired of having to achieve in a racist environment https://twitter.com/joshelman/status/1359392822848200707 …Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

1) i think the board likes to parade children out in front of them in meetings to shield them from criticism because they are cowards. 2) if there is really a racism problem at lowell rooted in lack of exposure to black people, the lottery is not going to fix that.

1) i think you’re denying the agency of the students here, they’re like 17/18 and can speak for themselves 2) will it Fix Racism? no but all you can do is take steps and lowell’s unusually strong culture of racism relative to other schools in the district is well documented

this is not about racism at lowell. 'racism at lowell' is a meme being used against merit-based education conceptually, which has been targeted by the board for years, and is being targeted by the far left nationally.

also we should of course listen to all of the teenagers at these schools, but no, they aren't in charge of these decisions, and they aren't equipped to make these decisions. this is the responsibility of adults, and the adults in charge need to be held accountable.
