should we dismantle private messaging platforms because someone, somewhere, may be spreading misinformation, a word for which we still refuse to provide a coherent and consistently-applied definition? "idk it's a little crazy but maybe! Lol" — the actual new york times
i'm sorry but anyone casually discussing whether or not we might "do something" about free people talking to each other privately on a messaging app is a fucking fascist, fuck off
One could say refusing to act when confronted with the fact that criminals will use end-to-end encrypted messaging to boost the market for child sexual abuse content is also endorsing a form of oppression.
cool, that is illegal and those people should go to jail. you don't get to prohibit free people from talking to each other because a small fraction of people are evil. this is like ground floor liberal democracy shit.
I'd prefer not to accelerate as fast as possible towards a future where every 5 out of your 100 adult male neighbors is pulling up child porn every night and paying for it with complete anonymity and impunity because we have sacred cows that blow up any discussion about it.
you’re right, the choice is between child porn and fascism. guess we should do fascism!
It's not fascism to answer the question 'does everyone, under all circumstances enjoy an absolute right to privacy?' with 'not from the law'. Justice requires the ability to enforce law, and that will be critically hindered by ubiquitous end-to-end encrypted communication
