i'm sorry but anyone casually discussing whether or not we might "do something" about free people talking to each other privately on a messaging app is a fucking fascist, fuck off
we should stop quoting this garbage, i don't even know why the nyt is even relevant anymore
They think the State is their friend
I’m sorry but telegram is one of few sources where true information is shared about Putin’s government. He SO wants this app gone. Probably for the same motives NYT wants to shut it down.
Should we dismantle a free press because some newspaper, somewhere may be spreading misinformation
isn’t “misinformation” the same as “free speech”? any information is “mis” from someone’s viewpoint. otherwise it’s not informative information, it’s common knowledge
No we should not dismantle. It’s not hard to define misinformation. Start with false or unproven “facts” asserted by big publishers. Even if we ban misinfo it won’t help as much as proponents think. “Experts believe the vote was rigged”, etc. Loopholes abound.
If everything in the world was publicly treatable by everyone, things would probably be better. Secrets distort markets. Secrets are used to gaslight people. Secrets let criminals get away with abuse, evasion, swindle. But we have to open up the powerful and the watchmen first!
When we’ll finally have that “reality csar”, there will es no such thing as misinformation. Thank you, NYT.
