for years, assuming ulterior motive in the anti-housing movement, i tossed around the glib "wow, it's almost as if you don't understand supply and demand
," but what i'm starting to realize is... ok wait, i actually think many people genuinely don't understand supply and demand

No. Follow these people on Twitter. They are aware of supply and demand. They just don't think it applies to housing in San Francisco.

It's prop 13. New housing brings in too little tax revenue. Even worse, it's locked in at cost plus inflation. It's like the city is selling a call on land values.

They actually believe that "if you build it they will come" until infinity, and not until, you know, the market reaches an equilibrium when there is no longer an artificial shortage of housing.

That’s Econ 101. Go back further. Sitting in a circle, listening, waiting your turn. Playing without hurting each other. Nap time and snack time without touching the work (even though it may be tempting). What everyone probably misses is a believable teacher. A real authority.https://twitter.com/Kurt_Vonnegut/status/1352890581945643014 …

No. It's shockingly rare for people to actually apply abstract knowledge to reality. They will consistently generate the minimum necessary excuses required to feel justified believing whatever they would have believed anyway (for particulars, even if convinced in the abstract).
-
I'm convinced of this tweet in the abstract and continue to fail at applying it to particulars.

The problem is you need to rebut their “but supply and demand doesn’t apply here” argument.
-
Well, perhaps they do and that is why they are making the city inhabitable.
