at first, chesa seemed to deny sf had a crime problem. he spoke frequently, but vaguely, of an unjust system. attempts to concretize his thinking were met with constant accusations of "grossly mischaracterizing" his comments. he passed blame. he distorted facts.

i'm used to speaking with tech people, trolls, and reporters. trolls i block. tech people and reporters are usually interested in well-formed positions and linear arguments, even if adversarial. but this was politics. it was chaotic, it was nebulous, it was manipulative.

a few people have said the moderators were not prepared, which is of course true. this was meant to be a broad conversation on the city, and a fun experiment. chesa arrived and we adapted, i thought fairly — ask questions, and let the man, who did exhibit some bravery, speak.

while the chat was exciting, and at times illuminating, we were definitely too accommodating, a mistake i will not make again. and btw i’m not apologizing for failing to navigate 3,000 opinions in the middle of what was, frankly, an overwhelming situation.

still, while i was disheartened by last night’s political cynicism, in some significant sense it was obviously a great success. thousands of people showed up for a peek into our city's russian nesting doll of disasters, and to find a way forward. that's a kind of hope. onward!

We had a session with
@chesaboudin and my district supervisor with 196 people and that turned into a similar accusatory session rather than listening. People came in with their mind already pre-formed from twitter and weren't willing to listen or ask questions to learn.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
