To use your verbiage, I would describe them as an "opposition party" to an "elected government" (though not sitting), acting in conspiratorial concert with the Commander in Chief of a "military force" capable of seizing power from that to-be-seated government. Seems close!

That feels like a lot of conditions to stack. It doesn't have to be a military to be a coup, and the likelihood of success doesn't seem relevant. Plus the goal was to disrupt electoral college just enough that it became 1-state-1-vote, that's more achievable but still a coup imo

The fact that they are capable or not does not define whether it's a coup d'etat. The definition is much simpler: sudden removal of a government from power, usually through violent means. Often some faction of the military is involved but not always.
