hall-of-fame ex-“tech journalist” returns from the abyss to remind us all the real problem with san francisco is not our pro-crime district attorney, but “rich tech investors” insidiously... funding local news https://twitter.com/paulbradleycarr/status/1345866530441969664 …

He's not wrong. I like Jason but the hiring someone to find dirt on Chesa thing is disconcerting.

Is it troubling that people at http://Antiwar.com investigate powerful people? Does that change if they're paid to do so? Does having a payroll of newspaper employees now give one a monopoly on manufacturing reality for everyone else? Should citizen journalism be illegal?

Wealthy dude hiring a PI to dig up dirt (unrelated to target’s role) on political target is sleazy.

"Unrelated". Interesting, because he says the exact opposite. They're not "political targets" if they have power over you and your life and the professional capacity to do harm to either. Normally that's called "public interest".https://twitter.com/Jason/status/1345870174432284672?s=20 …

Definitely was not the case originally. So Paul's screed got him to change. Good.

From GoFundMe: "This fundraiser will raise $75,000 to hire an investigative journalist to cover Chesa’s office and this approach." Where are you getting this notion that he's trying to figure out which side of the bed he sleeps on and the color of his underpants?

Want to see the Venn diagram of people who would think the full investigative weight of the Washington Post directed at someone like Nicholas Sandmann is journalism, but a DA Watchdog newsletter run by a constituent is "sleazy".

The original concept was sleazy. It's gotten better, presumably since critics have chimed in.

the incentive doesn’t matter — every political reporter has a bias. there’s nothing sleazy about investigating an incredibly powerful public servant.
