EVs aren't exactly environmentally friendly. Since people will likely treat ownership like regular cars they are likely much worse for the environment than cars with internal combustion engines.

Factor in all the mining for batteries, electrical charging that is still coal powered and the new materials. An old Toyota is more environmentally friendly than a new Tesla

This makes no sense. The fleet needs to be electrified to achieve zero emissions. The only way to do this is through new car sales.
