a bunch of hippies really sat down with a miracle happy vision potion that transported them to new dimensions — explicitly with the goal of widespread global adoption — and thought “people will take this if i call it... acid” what?

It’s not as straight a line as that. The name comes from a couple sources. Lysergic acid was shortened to just “sid” for street sland. There is also the relationship to “Syd” Barrett from Pink Floyd a band known for its lsd usage.

There was substantial I guess depending on how you'd define that scientific research into LSD before Nixon and the WoD. I might argue much of what we see now is backlash to his backlash to the hippies anti-war movement.
