Probably one underexplored aspect of the dystopia we insist on building — brick-by-brick, day-by-day — is the degree to which so many people are actually willing to pay in vein attempt to feel less lonely.
Problem 1: endemic modern loneliness Problem 2: heartless, snake oil loneliness balm Problem 3: the fucked up things that happen when large swaths of your population are not only miserable and isolated, but preyed upon, which invariably means -> anger
Maybe it’s like private prisons: a great idea that just hasn’t been done right yet.
Or like Democrats who say they are anti-war but vote for the Neo-Neocons. Am I off topic?
This has been common for centuries, Mike. Henry Ford invented the car to cure loneliness. Social clubs have been around forever. The real dystopia is that less and less people belong to social clubs and spend more time on their phones instead in front of real people.
I do think many are more aware of this plight than past times. We are naturally paranoid as well so some think all is snake oil pushing away the actual cure.
Loneliness is the biggest problem facing modernity. It's endemic. It's worse for your health than smoking. Lack of civil society and upward mobility in your town best explained voting for Trump in the primaries. And no one talks about it bc it's embarrassing.
Was this deindustrialization, or the Internet and video games replacing bowling leagues and the Legion hall?
I find it sad how little attention is given to loneliness in its many forms. When you realize how absurdly prevalent it is, and that most people don't open up and tell you how lonely they are, a lot of Internet phenomenons start to make more sense.
