man, we are living in different realities. coinbase didn’t do this despite risk of torching trust with the nyt, they did this bc they feel — based on stories published, and behavior on twitter — that the nyt is committed to destroying the tech industry. there’s no trust to torch.
When adversaries both see themselves as underdogs. One economically (for NYTimes, 
), the other culturally.
Does the tech industry believe they’re disparately covered or is it reaching self realization that they are now covered like a large mature player?
if you mean covered unfairly and inaccurately yes, i think many in tech are now suspicious of coverage more broadly on account of their own experience with the press
let’s take out the second part, since I know there is a large contingent of tech folks who “don’t care about the media”. You really think it was smart to Streisand effect themselves?
i’m actually not sure yet how i feel about this, though streisand effect concerns stories already public. we’re having a meta conversation now. it’s a story about stories, or how they’re written and why.
Every VC and every founder thinks the "media" wants to “destroy" tech (Andreessen literally said this to me about one of my publications) but reality is they can't look inward enough to see their problems and they don't want anyone else pointing them out. It's the worst bubble.
And believe me when the NYT has a fluffy profile of a company on the ride or a brilliant founder these people are salivating to get the attention. This argument is total BS.

At the end of the day, CB cannot control media narrative but probably what's most important to them is employee morale (rightfully so). As an employee of a controversial company, IMO this is a very smart way to prepare everyone for what's to come & not be shocked and confused.
why does it need to be public then? Can’t you do that through internal comms?
