This is fairly misleading. Compared to last year: * Homicides are up 40% * Burglary up 45% * Car theft up 32% * Arson up 33% These gains are offset by decreases in other crimes, which is good, but hardly the rosy picture Chris is painting.https://twitter.com/chrisarvinsf/status/1330738753577521158 …

i’ve read that burglary is up because car break-ins, which used to target tourists disproportionately, are down. that struck me as reasonable? no clue what’s happening with murder though.

I'd expect more crimes of desperation and opportunity since so many people have lost their jobs and are struggling to get by. But that doesn't normally carry over to murder! I have no guesses about that.

the notion that our property crime is being committed largely by desperate, newly jobless men and women struggling to get by is not correct. it’s hugely organized, which is why retargeting from cars to stores and homes has been so dramatic.https://www.google.com/amp/s/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2020/10/06/major-san-francisco-bay-area-retail-theft-ring-busted-five-suspects-arrested-8-million-in-stolen-merchandise-recovered/amp/ …

I certainly don't dispute that a large portion of our property crime is done by organized rings. I'm only supposing that a spike in crimes of opportunity could be caused, at least in part, by increased unemployment. I should have stuck to not guessing :)https://twitter.com/sbuss/status/1330910912602017793?s=19 …

I wouldn't hazard to guess. So many things different about this year that it's nigh impossible to build a convincing narrative.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that a desperate, newly jobless person is more likely to join or step up their efforts in a property crime ring?
