finally paid off my student loans last year. doing "the right thing" was a tremendous burden that meaningfully, negatively impacted my life. ignoring people like me, or minimizing the anger we're about to see, will have significant, probably years-long political consequences.

How about creating affordability calculators and more accurate college league tables so people know *before* they take a course, their likely financial returns.

I mean the problem here is not college debt per se, it's how much students are charged for a crappy product and how little they consider what their return on investment will be.

Maybe make the educational institution that benefited from the loan share the pain of the lender in the event of bankruptcy. Probably can't do it retroactively, but let's at least align incentives going forward.

The system is designed to create debt slaves who can't get out from under their obligations. It knows we will leave without the pressure of debt and loss of healthcare. Why would we continue to follow this silly corporate system otherwise?
