finally paid off my student loans last year. doing "the right thing" was a tremendous burden that meaningfully, negatively impacted my life. ignoring people like me, or minimizing the anger we're about to see, will have significant, probably years-long political consequences.

Look at it this way, every financial decision has some tail risk, paying back debt no exception.

Small comfort, but you will get to scoff at your peers and say stuff like, “Oh, you couldn’t pay your student loan off? I did that years ago” for the rest of your life. So it’s not all bad.
And the only appropriate answer to “You just want people to suffer like you did,” is “More.”
I have eight years left of $1,250/month. But do you know who accepted that loan to try and get out of a financial blackhole and deadend? Me. It annoys me that the Fed gov makes a killing off of student loans, but anyone giving out loans would.
