I’m willing to place the lion’s share of the blame on our elected officials who never bothered to gain more than a surface level of understanding of these issues. The tech companies have made mistakes, but the politicians are doing their thing, trying to use them to accrue power.
it absolutely kills me to defend them in any way whatsoever, but tech's catastrophic handling of these issues has nothing to do with any politician in washington. we fucked this up on our own.

This was mostly unwinnable. Both sides demanded favorable treatment. Neither side actually wanted impartiality.

The level of centralization is untenable. It's been great for profits, but it cannot last. Note that this is readily apparent to anyone who spends time in both deep red and deep blue areas. One size does not fit all. It never did.
