so facebook suppressed the story to fact-check, while twitter blocked it for sharing hacked information. in other words: facebook censored it because it's false, twitter because it's true.

my guess has been that it's at least something like the DNC hack - the info obtained is real (at least some of it) but phony accounts were used to make it go viral. FB said they throttled it bc of "signals" associated with misinfo, which would fit
one thing i am in broad agreement with most tech critics on is no one should have to guess

yeah, my other guess was they made these moves secure in the knowledge they'd be able to say more later that made it defensible. could be held back by ongoing investigations, etc. if that's not the case, these actions look a lot worse

I thought Twitter initially couched it as being a link to a potentially malicious site, and that they were blocking it for user safety. It's a pretty transparent attempt at a CYA explanation. How many links from the NYP are shared daily without issue?
