I got lit up on Facebook for this earlier and know it was foolish of me to share there but I guess I’m REKTless

It is not irrational for Tech to think it would fare better doing this and the GOP winning than not doing it and the Dems winning. Most GOP Senators are (even today) stuck in the "build your own Google" ideology.

similar to why courts grant preliminary injunctions--if fb thought it was 1) likely the story would not survive fact checking 2) distribution in the intervening time would disseminate misinformation, why not act on that likelihood? though this reasoning should be made explicit.
