genuinely did not know "preference" was offensive. and... i'm gay? "choice" would be incorrect. but do people choose their preferences?

We can debate the semantics of the word, but it’s pretty clear the phrase hasn’t been in use for a long time. No equal rights group uses it. I’ve never met a gay person who used it to describe themselves. Hirono‘s claim is probably correct: “I don’t think it was an accident.”

I think language is dynamic and, especially around identity, changes quickly. I think that term has annoyed me for probably since a bit before Obama seems to have used it here.
