genuinely did not know "preference" was offensive. and... i'm gay? "choice" would be incorrect. but do people choose their preferences?

It’s great if the phrase “sexual preference” doesn’t offend you personally - more power to you. I wouldn’t dream of telling you what to feel. But I think it’s pretty clear she’s with Scalia, whose contempt for queer folks leapt off the page of his rulings and dissents.
