i guess what i’m wondering is if “journalist” is now just “person with opinions and ‘contacts’ who writes about things” are most of us actually journalists? am... i a journalist? because that would uncomfortably complicate my personal identity.

The original meaning of 'journalist' is just someone who keeps a daily journal, but all sorts of pomp has built up around the term. You described the Coinbase memo by saying 'nature is healing'; it's the same thing. The term is losing its pretensions and becoming accurate again.
