the vp debate has inspired a lot of nostalgic recollection of “the way things were,” as if the days of candidates who stood for nothing but power taking turns lying for ninety minutes straight — *politely* though, and with a ‘presidential demeanor’ — was in any way admirable

can we address the fact that a candidate is actually supposed to run through their whole economic policy in under 2 minutes, the whole format is set up to see whose the better debater not who has better ideas
the debates have not actually had anything to do with learning about the way our politicians think about the world, or their philosophy of government, for at least the last thirty years (my living memory), and probably not since the advent of television
